Since working through DBT, this skill has been pretty eye-opening for me. It feels like I have finally been given a guideline to help me have important conversations where I don't feel emotionally distraught and just upset when things don't go the way I plan. It can even be when perhaps the person I am talking to just isn't able to understand what I am trying to ask. Or even when I need to have an important conversation about my feelings with someone I care about.
This skill for me is one that is good in so many situations. It creates a healthy tool to have effective conversations with those around us. It gives us the ability to look for a guide if we are not able to have a hard conversation with someone. Sometimes, things can be hard to express. It can be even harder when we are trying to explain something important but our emotions get the better of us. They cause us to become upset, or worse - the other person in the situation to become upset. I know I cannot count the number of times I could have used this skill if I have been given the tools for it. I hope the DEAR MAN skill can help others else as much as it's currently helping me. I recommend articles online showing examples of how to use this skill and when.
Here is a link to a video I enjoy and recommend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb79qXt6YAs
Thank you for checking this out. I again hope this can help others as much as it's helping me.
